Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Safety Officer and site management in promoting occupational health and safety across mining and earth-moving operations.
- Support the implementation of workplace health and safety policies, procedures, programs, and systems designed to maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
- Assist in monitoring compliance with applicable health and safety laws, regulations, company policies, and safe work procedures, particularly in relation to equipment and workplace activities.
- Conduct routine workplace and worksite inspections with the Safety Officer to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and unsafe work practices, and report findings for appropriate corrective action.
- Assist with the recording, reporting, and investigation of workplace accidents, incidents, injuries, and near misses, including gathering relevant information and maintaining accurate records.
- Support the implementation of corrective and preventive measures to address identified safety risks and help reduce workplace accidents and injuries.
- Assist in organizing and delivering health and safety awareness sessions, toolbox talks, orientations, and other safety training activities for employees and contractors.
- Support emergency preparedness activities, including fire safety, first aid, emergency response procedures, and mine emergency or rescue activities as directed by the Safety Officer.
- Assist with checking safety equipment, machinery, tools, and work areas to ensure they are being used and maintained in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, inspection reports, accident records, training records, and other required documentation.
- Assist in monitoring the safety performance of mining and earth-moving activities and report identified operating or safety concerns to the Safety Officer and relevant supervisors.
- Communicate relevant safety information, hazards, incidents, and workplace conditions to employees, supervisors, and the incoming shift to ensure effective safety handover and follow-up.
- Assist the Safety Officer in preparing routine safety reports, statistics, and updates for management.
- Participate in emergency response activities and promptly report safety emergencies, unsafe conditions, or serious incidents to the appropriate supervisor or Safety Officer.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Mining, Engineering, or a related field is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, mining safety practices, and workplace safety procedures.
- Familiarity with applicable health and safety rules and regulations in Liberia.
- Ability to identify workplace hazards and unsafe working conditions and report them appropriately.
- Good observation, communication, record-keeping, and reporting skills.
- Ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, contractors, and management.
- Basic computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Word and Excel, for maintaining safety records and preparing reports.
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to workplace emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, attention to detail, teamwork, and continuous learning.
Experience
Minimum 1–2 years of experience in occupational health and safety, mining, construction, earth-moving operations, or a related industrial environment. Candidates should have a basic understanding of workplace safety rules and regulations applicable in Liberia and demonstrate a willingness to work in a mining or field-based environment.
