Job Summary

Company background
Strategic Development Mining Company (SDMC) is a Liberian mining company engaged in alluvial mining under a Class B mining licence issued by the Government of Liberia. The company seeks to develop its mineral resources through efficient operations, responsible resource management, workforce development and constructive relationships with host communities.
Position purpose
Carry out authorised welding, cutting and fabrication to maintain mining equipment and plant structures in a safe and serviceable condition.

Job Description

Principal responsibilities

·       Inspect damaged components and confirm repair instructions, material suitability and the required welding method before starting.

·       Perform welding, cutting and fabrication on approved components such as chutes, guards, brackets, pipes and plant supports.

·       Read drawings, take measurements and prepare joints, fit-up and consumables to achieve the required repair quality.

·       Apply hot work controls including authorisation, fire watch, ventilation, spark containment and suitable extinguishing equipment.

·       Inspect leads, electrode holders, gas hoses, regulators and cylinders; secure and store equipment correctly.

·       Ensure equipment is isolated, depressurised and cleaned before repair; obtain specific clearance for tanks, enclosed spaces or contaminated equipment.

·       Inspect completed welds and arrange additional testing where specified; refer structural, lifting or pressure component repairs for competent engineering approval.

·       Maintain job records, report defects and keep welding areas free of combustible materials and avoidable trip hazards.

·       Inspect chutes and other wear components with plant personnel and recommend timely repair before failure disrupts operations.

·       Confirm the welding process, consumables and repair procedure suit the material and service conditions.

·       Protect nearby personnel with suitable screens and control welding fumes through appropriate ventilation and other measures.

·       Never weld sealed containers or previously contaminated tanks without approved cleaning, assessment and work authorisation.

·       Route cables and hoses to avoid water, vehicle movement, sharp edges and pedestrian access.

·       Complete approved fabrication tasks to dimensions and tolerances; record inspection results and report repairs needing specialist testing.

Competence in the welding processes and materials used on site. Ability to interpret basic fabrication drawings and recognise defective welds. Relevant coded welding certification is desirable for specialised work.

Desirable  Process-specific welding certification where the task requires it; experience with abrasive wear repairs and mining plant fabrication.

Core competencies

Precision, safe work discipline, sound judgement about repair limits and effective coordination with mechanics and plant personnel.

Performance measures

Repair quality and rework; completion against agreed schedules; condition of welding equipment; accuracy of job records; consistent application of hot work and fire prevention controls. Targets will be agreed against site baselines; production or cost results must be assessed alongside safe practices and reliable reporting.

Principal records and deliverables

Fabrication measurements and job records; welding equipment checks; hot work documentation; completed repair inspection record.

Authority and accountability

Carry out approved welding and fabrication within demonstrated competence. Do not modify lifting points, load-bearing structures or pressure components without competent engineering approval and specified inspection.

Working conditions and common obligations

Site-based work may involve heat, rain, uneven ground, noise, dust and proximity to operating machinery. Follow approved procedures, use required protective equipment and report hazards promptly. Protect company assets and confidential information; treat colleagues and host communities respectfully. Other assigned duties must be reasonable and consistent with competence.
