Job Summary

Welthungerhilfe was founded in 1962 and is a non-profit making, non-denominational, and politically independent organization. Welthungerhilfe has been working in Liberia since 2003 with a focus on Agriculture/Inclusive Food
Systems and Nutrition Security, Infrastructure that facilitate access to markets and health facilities, Health System Strengthening and WASH.
The Head of Project will play a key role in fostering a restoration of degraded forests, preservation of biodiversity, protection and development of alternative livelihoods and building climate resilience, through an integrated, sustainable, and resilient approach. Additionally, the HOP leads and facilitates coordination among partner organizations, ensuring effective collaboration, compliance, and delivery of joint program objectives. The HoP will support institutional strengthening both technically and on program cycle management.

Job Description

Responsible for: The Head of Project will lead the implementation of a project focused on addressing deforestation
within smallholder rice and cocoa supply chains. The project aims to restore degraded forests, preserve biodiversity, protect livelihood, using satellite-based land cover analysis, and ecosystem dynamics for their impact on local communities to be better understood.
This role leads and coordinates partner organizations, in a transboundary project ensuring effective collaboration and delivery of joint program objectives. The role requires a strong background in sustainable agriculture, supply chain management, and community engagement. The Head of Project will work closely with smallholder farmers, local stakeholders, government agencies, and private sector partners to promote deforestation-free supply chains and improve land-use efficiency.


Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Project planning and implementation
• Develop and oversee the execution of the project work plan, ensuring alignment with objectives, timelines, and budget.
• Implement strategies to reduce deforestation in smallholder rice and cocoa supply chains by promoting sustainable land-use practices.
• Ensure effective coordination between different project stakeholders, including farmers, cooperatives, private sector actors, and policymakers.
2. Consortium coordination and Project Oversight
• Monitor implementation progress, ensure compliance with donor requirements, and support quality assurance across all consortium activities
• Facilitate regular communication and collaboration among consortium partners to ensure alignment of goals, activities, and timelines.
• Represent the consortium to the government stakeholders, and other external actors, and lead in the preparation of Projects reports as per donor regulation.
3. Stakeholder engagement and partnerships
• Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government bodies, private sector actors, and civil society organizations.
• Engage with local communities to ensure participatory decision-making and inclusive governance in land-use planning.
• Advocate for policies that support sustainable smallholder supply chains and responsible sourcing of rice and cocoa.


4. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL), and Reporting
• Establish and oversee a monitoring and evaluation (MEAL) framework to track project outcomes and impacts.
• Conduct field assessments to measure progress in reducing deforestation and improving smallholder productivity.
• Prepare and submit regular reports, documenting lessons learned, success stories, and best practices.
5. Financial and risk management
• Manage project budgets, ensuring funds are allocated efficiently and in compliance with donor requirements.
• Identify risks related to project implementation and develop mitigation strategies to address challenges.
• Support fundraising and resource mobilization efforts to scale up project activities.
6. Institutional strengthening of the implementing partner
• Assess the organizational capacity of the implementing partner and identify areas for improvement.
• Provide training on project management, financial management, and compliance with donor regulations.


• Support the development of internal policies and governance structures for sustainability.
7. Technical capacity building of the implementing partner
• Facilitate training sessions on sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, and deforestation-free supply chains.
• Provide guidance on climate-smart agriculture, land-use planning, and farmer extension services.
• Promote knowledge-sharing on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) methodologies and impact assessment.
Capacity building of farmer support
• Design and deliver training programs to build the capacity of smallholder farmers in sustainable land management, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture.
• Support smallholders in adopting climate-smart practices that maximize productivity without expanding into natural forests.
• Work with cooperatives and farmers to improve access to finance, markets, and technical resources


Language Skills • Proficiency in English mandatory, and a local language is an added advantage 


Professional Experience:  managing projects related to sustainable agriculture, deforestation-free supply chains, or rural livelihoods.
• Strong understanding of deforestation drivers in agricultural landscapes and practical approaches to addressing them.
